Historical Attractions Near Preston
Haighton Manor is set in the heart of rural Lancashire, close to Preston. It is surrounded by the most beautiful countryside.
The building itself is steeped in history. An indenture dated 1651 relating to fields just east of the hotel, refers to Houghton House. We believe that this Houghton House is the building now known as Haighton Manor.
In the late seventeenth century the house was owned by the Cardwells, who were wealthy landowners and tanners of Barton. In it’s more recent history, in 1910, the Whittingham Hospital committee purchased the property with 104 acres for £5600, and it was used as accommodation for patients and known as an Asylum, with patients mainly suffering to what we now know as postnatal depression. Their therapy was to spend time in the gardens and work the land, growing their own produce – enough to make anyone feel better!
If history is your thing, then there’s plenty to explore in the area.
