Historical Attractions near Worthing

The Highdown is set in the heart of the South Downs, surrounded by the most beautiful countryside.

The pub itself is steeped in history, the present house was built at Highdown around 1820 and was owned at some time in the 19th century by the Lyons family. In 1909 the house and surrounding grounds were bought by Major, later Sir Frederick Stern and his wife. It was Sir Stern who was renowned as a plant collector and authority on plants like snowdrops. He established the gardens around the house which are now known as Highdown Gardens.

Worthing Museum

Worthing museum & art gallery, Chapel Rd BN11 1HP - 4 miles from the Highdown

Open 9am to 5pm. Worthing Museum and Art Gallery is in the centre of Worthing near the grade II* listed St Paul's. The building, which celebrated its centenary in 2008, was originally designed to house the town's library as well as the museum, it is the largest museum in West Sussex.


 

Arundel Castle

7 miles from the Highdown.

Arundel Castle is a historic fortress in West Sussex that has been the ancestral home of the Dukes of Norfolk for over 850 years. Originally a Norman motte-and-bailey castle built after 1067, it was significantly rebuilt in the Gothic style between the 1870s and 1890s, making it a masterpiece of Victorian architecture. Today, it is a major visitor attraction featuring a Norman Keep, magnificent gardens, and a vast collection of art and historic artifacts.


 

Lancing college chapel

Lancing college, Lancing BN15 0RW - 8 miles from the Highdown - Open 8am to 5pm.

Lancing College Chapel dominates the landscape to the north of the A27 and across the Adur Valley. It was founded in 1868 and dedicated in 1911. It is a stunning example of Gothic revival and has a nave reaching over 90ft to the apex of the vault. The Rose Window has over 30,000 pieces of stained glass, it has a 32ft diameter and is one of the largest in England.

Goodwood House is a country house and estate covering 4,900 hectares in Westhampnett, Chichester, West Sussex, England and is the seat of the Duke of Richmond. The house was built in about 1600 and is a Grade I listed building.
