Drink this and you'll know why Muscadet is so popular. It's refreshing with good weight and a hint of pepper - goodbye dreary day, hello happy night.
Clean but rounded
Freedom Cross Sauvignon Blanc - South Africa 3.10 17.25
Fresh Sauvignon without the edgy steel of some European examples - alluring tropical fruit makes for very easy drinking.
Pampas Chardonnay/Chenin - Mendoza 2.80 15.25
A lovely balance between tropical rounded Chardonnay and floral crisp Chenin Blanc. Great value everyday drinking for those who like it a little less on the dry side.

A cracking example packed with tropical fruit flavours and aromas with a great fresh feel on the finish.
Allan Scott Sauvignon Blanc - Marlborough, New Zealand 26.50
Lip-smacking 'lemon and lime' with gooseberry and kiwi-fruit overtones. Allan holds his Sauvignon back a little to develop depth and complexity. A Kiwi classic.
Henri Ehrhart Muscat d'Alsace Reserve 2005 - France 21.50
This has lovely honeysuckle and peaches on the nose with great weight and flavour in the mouth. It truly deserves to be a favourite.
Mas du Lubian Viognier 2006 Coteaux de L'Ardeche - Rhone 24.50
Honeyed, voluptuous, aromatic and floral. Luscious 'white peachy' fruit with white pepper overtones lead to an unexpectedly mineralic finish.
Rich and full
Remi Rollin Pernard-Vergelesses 2005 - Burgundy France 37.50
A stunning white Burgundy with a ripe almondy nose then plenty of peach and lemon flavours. A truly lovely wine.
Robertson Chenin Blanc - South Africa 2.80 15.25
One step up from dry, but it never gets cloying - fish leap at the chance to be consumed by its side.
Les Burdines Macon Villages - France 19.50
This is a serious white Burgundy with refreshing lemon fruit flavours cut through by a complex mineralic streak, with a deliciously long finish.
Emile Petit Chablis - France 28.50
Old style Chablis with pronounced buttery characteristics and lots of vanilla oak.

Elegant and less weighty

This fruity little Beaujolais has aromas of violets, then red fruits and a touch of tannin making for a cracking glass of wine.
Zeni Bardolino - Italy 19.95
Bardolino is the classic lunchtime wine of Varona: with flowers on the nose, this velvety and full flavoured in the mouth.
Chateau de Bel Avenir - Beaujolais 19.95
Light and fruity, showing all the youthful charm that typifies the Beaujolais region.
Smooth and earthy
Les Grandes Serres Cotes du Rhone - France 3.30 18.25
This is a really very good, simple Cotes du Rhone: typically herby flavours with light, fresh fruit.
Epoto Tempranillo - Spain 3.10 17.25
Hints of smokiness on the palate with good rich fruit uplifted by a judicious amount of soft creamy American oak.
Pampas Shiraz/Malbec - Mendoza 2.80 15.25
A full and meaty wine with lots of spicy plum fruits and soft tannins. Lovely.
Rioja Bodegas de Abalos - Spain 3.10 17.25
A soft and fruity little Rioja, tinged with subtle spice and vanilla. Very easy drinking.
Tanners Claret - Bordeaux France 19.95
Much inexpensive Bordeaux can be dried out, hollow and dusty, but not this juicy, rounded little number which displays a proper, grown-up farmyard character.
Sierra Cantabria Rioja Reserva 2003 - Spain 32.50
A velvet smooth, classic Rioja with bags of blackberries, raspberries and vanilla.
Chateau Les Amoureuses Cotes du Rhone 2004 - France 28.50
Ripe, glossy raspberry bouquet, spiced with a touch of black peppercorn with a long, long finish.
Warm and spicy
Alto Pampas Pinot Noir - Argentina 3.00 16.25
Delicious easy drinking from a sometimes difficult grape.
Forge Mill Pinotage - South Africa 18.25
The product of crossing Pinot Noir and Cinsault, Pinotage is South Africa's unique grape. This example is softly styled with berry fruit and a hint of oak.

Great Auzzie kit bursting with blackcurrants, touched with pepper and cinnamon spice.
Duque de Visea 2002, Dao - Portugal 19.95
Vibrant, full-bodied and delicious - the new kid on the block, but well worth a go.
Chateau Villerambert L'Opera Minervois - France 19.95
Minervois fired from an Old World French cannon - this is a dark, deep garnet-red wine with good structure, power and concentration.
Crozes Hermitage Cave de Clairmonts - Rhone, France 28.50
With a lovely deep purple colour, this appealing wine has obvious blackberry fruit with good depth and rounded tannins. Spicy on the finish.
Los Vilos Cabernet Sauvignon - Chile 3.10 16.95
This cabernet Sauvignon has a hint of Merlot that gives added roundness. Rich, ripe and fruity.
Rich and plummy
Remi and Jerome Syrah - France 3.30 18.25
A full and juicy Shiraz overflowing with soft blackberries and damsons and plenty of southern French warmth to top it off. Lovely stuff.
Saint Roch Chateauneuf du Pape 2001 - France 37.50
This wine is blessed by the Gods. It is almost sacremental.
Campolieti Valpolicella Ripasso - Italy 23.50
Simply packed with rich berry fruit reminiscent of Christmas cake, this is fermented over the lees of their Amarone for an incredibly rich and fruity style.
Ladera Verde Merlot - Chile 2.80 15.25
Lovely plummy Merlot fruit with typical Chilean ripeness. Easy and very very drinkable.
Rayun Carmenere - Chile 18.25
Leafy, blackcurrant fruit, very soft tannins and deep, deep colour make for a very interesting wine.
Dark and satanic
Rams Leap Shiraz - Australia 22.50
American oak adds dark chocolate complexity to the plush blackcurrant flavours of this very moreish wine. Old World sophistication with an Australian pedigree.
Vega Real Roble - Spain 22.50
Full, fresh and extremely persistent with big fruit flavours - 100% Tempranillo from the exciting Ribera del Duero region. Something a bit different for the more adventurous amongst you.
Feudi di San Marzano Negroamaro - Puglia 19.00
This rich, dark and delicious wine has black cherry jam and mocha chocolate aromas followed by stewed, herby black fruits. Sumptuous stuff at a great price.
Amicus Reserve Shiraz - Langhorn Creek 49.00
What a beauty. Packed with black fruits and bursting with flavour, this is a great big bear hug of a wine.
Zenato Ripassa Valpolicella - Italy 32.50
A rich dark-baked Christmas cake of a wine with a nose of sun-dried raisins. Amarone in all but name. Sublime.
Pudding wine
La Fleur des Pins, Graves Superieures - France (375ml) 15.50
Okay, you could pay twice the price for Sauternes, but there's really no reason to. Full of orange and marmalade aromas the palate is fresh and loaded with lovely flavours.
Tokaji Aszu 2004 - Hungary 16.50
Noble dessert nectar with concentrated dried apricots and honey. Enough for four (just).
