What is the Kickstart Scheme?

It’s part of the government’s plan for jobs to support business growth and create new job opportunities for young people. In order to qualify for the Kickstart scheme you must be 16-24 years-of-age and currently claiming Universal Credit.

If successful you will…

Get a taster of kitchen life – a 6-month journey experiencing each area of the kitchen from Kitchen Porter to working alongside the Head Chef.

You’ll work for Brunning and Price, a well-respected pub restaurant company with fabulous kitchens, fresh food, and good quality ingredients. You’ll be part of a team and learn all about working in a kitchen brigade.

Over the period of your Kickstart placement you’ll gain qualifications and essential kitchen skills, and you’ll also gain confidence and a range of additional skills that will help you find work in the future.

In this job, you’ll shadow experienced members of the team to learn how food recipes are created and followed, how a busy service operates and you’ll be given support to create and present your own dishes including starters and puddings.

You’ll learn the importance of health and safety and food safety in the kitchen as well as gaining practical skills including knife handling and uses, using kitchen equipment, food preparation, cooking and stock control.

Of course, you’ll start with all the kitchen basics including cleaning, dishwashing, dealing with waste and recycling, food packaging and labelling and helping with food deliveries. All of these are a vital aspect of any kitchen role.




Hours per week

  • 25 hours per week
  • Tuesday 10am – 4pm
  • Friday 10am – 5pm

Please note these hours may vary and there may also be additional hours available if you’d like them.

Hourly rate of pay National Minimum Wage - depending on age (visit www.gov.uk for further information on the National Minimum Wage).
