The White Hart Chipstead wine list

House white 125 ml Bottle
Alexis Lichine Colombard Sauvignon 2.90 14.95
Pale straw in colour, this has a floral, aromatic nose. Soft on the palate followed by late developing fruit and a good acidity that complements the fruit, giving a fresh and clean finish.
Crisp, dry and refreshing
Tierra Sauvignon Blanc, Maule Valley, Chile 2.90 15.95
This is herbaceous in style with a distinct nettley aroma: a fine demonstration of Sauvignon's varietal characteristics.
Marchesini Pinot Grigio del Veneto, Italy 3.00 15.95
Classic Pinot Grigio with a touch of almond make this a veritable quaff-meister.
Armidale Estate Hill Grove Unoaked Chardonnay, Australia 3.20 16.95
Good Chardonnnay flavours which remain fresh throughout as a result of the absence of the old oak tree.
Le Petit Broux Sancerre, France 29.95
A friendly Sancerre with classic aromas of gooseberries and nettles, and a zingy edge that keeps things interesting in the mouth.
Fruity and aromatic
Kleine Zalze Bush Vines Chenin Blanc, South Africa 3.10 15.95
Really rounded, silky, weighty and oaky but with a touch of lemon. Bags of yellow tropical fruit leap out like gazelles from the bush. One step up from dry, but it never cloys.
Etchart Privado Torrontes, Argentina 17.95
Juicy and fragrant lychees, melon and elderflower. If I had but twenty pounds left in the world, this is what I would do with it. Then I'd put the change on an accumulator at Lingfield so I could buy some more later.
De Gras Reserva Viognier, Chile 17.95
An exotic wine packed with aromas of ripe tropical fruit and flowers, with juicy nectarine, melon and papaya flavours to the fore, finishing rounded and succulent.
Riverstone Ridge Sauvignon Blanc, New Zealand 3.75 19.95
Classic Kiwi kit - gooseberries and asparagus, with lots of elegant tropical fruit that just keeps going and going.
Villa Maria Reisling, New Zealand 21.50
This has ripe citrus-lime and spring blossom on the nose, with more lemon and pear on the palate. The finish is dry with nice acidity and minerality.
Clean but rounded
Soave Classico, Bolla, Italy 25.95
Soave means 'soft' in Italian, and the soft floral bouquet and clean pear and lemon flavours help this wine live up to its name.
Chablis Reserve Croix St Joseph, J.Moreau, France 34.95
Traditional old-school Chablis - it's as French as Gérard Depardieu in a beret with a string of onions round his neck, pedaling his bicyclette home from the rugby having lost to Les Rosbifs.
Rich and full
Robert Skalli Oaked Chardonnay, France 3.75 19.95
A big old fella, this is rich and intense, and needs to be taken with food.
Pouilly-Fumee Cuvee du Tronsec, Joseph Mellot, France 29.95
Gunflint on the nose, with a slightly citrus edge to the Sauvignon that keeps it fresh but rounded: an aristocrat.
Villa Maria Clifford Bay Reserve Sauvignon Blanc, New Zealand 29.95
This has a fabulous intense tropical fruit kick balanced with crisp lemon acidity and a savoury, elderflower hint which makes this refreshingly different.
Rosé
Pinot Grigio Rosato del Veneto, Marchesini, Italy 3.00 15.95
A classic picnic wine, this has juicy raspberry overtones and is most agreeable. Great on a sunny day.
Vendage White Zinfandel, USA 3.30 17.45
Strawberries and cream in a glass.
La Lande Cinsault, France 18.95
A strawberry nose introduces a really gorgeous rose with hints of caramel whilst remaining fresh and uncloying. This was the stand-out find of a recent 50-bin tasting.
Pudding wine
Royal Tokaji Aszu 1/4 btl 18.95
This intriguing and beguiling wine is an intense honeyed mouthful with hints of orange marmalade and a kiss of ginger.
Triana Pedro Ximenez, Hidalgo, Spain 19.95
A delicious alternative to Port as a digestif and quite the most wonderful thing poured over the finest vanilla ice cream. It is dark, rich and opulently sweet with treacle and dried plum flavours.
Muscat de Baumes-de-Venise, France. 37.5 cl 24.45
This is a light, fresh vibrant Muscat, brimming with exotic fruits including papaya, peach and mandarin orange, as opposed to the sticky, raisined, oxidised style.
House red
Montepulciano d'Abruzzo Collezione Marchesini, Italy 2.90 14.95
A beautiful little Italian quaffer.
Light and fruity
Rare Vineyards Pinot Noir, Vin de France 3.40 17.95
Excellent Pinot character which remains vibrant and alive in the mouth.
Cecchi Foriero Chianti, Italy 19.95
Traditional Chianti as it used to be, before they started stuffing it with jammy fruit to appeal to the American market. Clean and spicy Sangiovese: this will take you truffling with your pig in the hills of Tuscany.
Cote de Brouilly Dom.Balloquet, Burgundy, France 34.95
This is classic Burgundy - clean in the mouth and on the finish, but packed with flavour - a truly elegant wine.
Warm and spicy
Solstice Shiraz, Sicily 15.95
Good farmyard nose. Shirazy but not jammy, with a herbaceous quality, this blends power with finesse.
Salice Salentino 35 Parallelo, Puglia, Italy 16.95
A herby, stalky nose introduces a complex, hot wine that's not at all overbearing. Interesting stuff.
The Pavillion Shiraz Viognier, Boschendal, South Africa 3.40 17.95
This is the blend made famous by Cote Roti in the Rhone, and the boys in Boschendhal make the wine sing in the glass.
Arium Crianza 3.40 17.95
A Rioja in all but name...this slips down a treat and is immensely moreish.
Etchart Privado Malbec, Valle de Cafayate, Argentina 3.30 17.95
A very soft and juicy wine, with ripe damson and vanilla on the nose. Almost opulent in style.
Smooth and earthy
Cotes du Rhone La Denteliere Caves St Pierre, France 16.95
Very palatable - compared to all those shouty Australian reds jumping up and down and waving their arms about, this is a harmonious male voice choir.
Luis Felipe Edwards Lot 40 Cabernet Sauvignon, Chile 3.20 16.95
This is Cabernet to the bottom of its Cuban-heeled boots, with cassis, bramble, a touch of mint and green pepper.
Faustino V Rioja Reserva, Spain 29.95
This is classic old school Rioja, and is correct in every detail: black cherry and brown spice aromas abound with a wiff of oaky vanillins, with plenty of crisp, spicy black fruit in the mouth.
Chateau Lyonnat, Lussac, St Emilion, France 29.95
Cracking wine - old fashioned, traditional St Emilion. St Emilion proudly flies the Merlot flag, as copied throughout the New World, and this is absolutely on the button.
Urlar Pinot Noir, New Zealand 36.50
A gorgeous drop if your tastes run to earthy, rotty, bosky, ferny, truffly wines. Like old fashioned Burgundy before they cleaned up their cellars.
Rich and plummy
Outback Chase Shiraz Cabernet 15.95
A rich and full blend: this is quintessentially Australian, but it avoids any cloying jamminess.
Errazuriz 1870 Teno Block Merlot, Chile 3.55 18.95
Medium-bodied, juicy Merlot. Rich and plummy aromas with a subtle hint of chocolate. Give this a nice warm home in your tummy.

Good Prosecco nose with a salty tang, and good flavours with gentle overtones of stone fruit.

Louis Dornier et Fils Brut, France 39.95
This is full and rounded, with flavours to savour. A real find for us.
Veuve Cliquot Yellow Label, France 49.95
Well known for its full-bodied, biscuity style and fine finish.
