The Nevill Crest and Gun is an intriguingly named pub, in a building with over 500 years of history. The ‘Nevill Crest’ refers quite literally to the crest of the Nevill family, the Earls of Abergavenney, on whose estate the pub was built: it is their monogram that adorns the building and many others in the surrounding area.
The ‘Gun’ arose from a forge on the estate which produced cannons and canon balls for the Nevilles: at one time an ancient canon, made of strips of metal held together with loops, was fired on fair days or days of celebration, and it is this that is referred to in the name: after all, many of the local villagers would have been employed in the forge.
The building is in a sorry state and we’re in the process of applying for the various permissions to start the restoration ball rolling…watch this space for an update on progress and an ETA for the rejuvenated old lady.
